Writing Summer Class for Purpose Academy Students

Writing Design

On July 2nd, 2021, Sylvia Smith and Lia Tejeda started a writing/graphic design summer class for Purpose Academy students. In this class, students will be learning about various literary devices and how they are used, as well as how to respond to writing prompts concisely and effectively. Through class games and practice prompts, students will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge that they learn and eventually present it through a graphic design platform.

In the first class, students learned about common literary devices, such as point of view, setting, characterization, conflict, dialogue, and types of figurative language. Students learned to identify these devices through examples from literature and also learned about why authors make choices to employ certain literary devices.

In the second class, students learned about additional types of figurative language, such as similes and metaphors, hyperbole, idioms, hyperboles, allusions, analogies, foreshadowing, motifs, satire, and irony. Then, students tested the knowledge they learned from the past two classes by playing Kahoot! games on types of literary devices and advanced vocabulary.

In the third class, students learned the ACES (answer, cite, explain, summarize) approach for responding to prompts. Several sample prompts were covered in class, and students were given the opportunity to interactively develop a response to a prompt.

In the fourth class, an example of ACES and an example of ACESCES were covered in class. Then, students were given the opportunity to select a book of their choice and respond to a writing prompt using the ACES method.

In the fifth class, students continued working independently on their ACES prompts from last week. They were then given the opportunity to share their responses in class and receive constructive feedback. To close off the final week of writing classes, students participated in Kahoot! games at the end.
